Historique :	'... l'on fera le choix de deux peintres d'un beau talent pour peindre deux grands tableaux... l'autre la bienfaisance consolant les malheureux pour une honnête abondance. Je tiens à ce que les deux dont je parle ci-dessus soient aussi bien faits' que le Songe de saint Joseph (testament de M.-J. Boulard, 1825). 'Un des derniers ouvrages de l'artiste est le rubénien et chaleureux saint Michel..., chef-d'oeuvre aujourd'hui encore conservé... ' (J.-P. Cuzin, 1974). N'en est pas moins dans un style très graphique qui est une constante de Meynier. On peut dire que tout le répertoire de ce peintre, les anges notamment, est en place dès son Prix de Rome de 1792.
