Historique :	'... l'on fera le choix de deux peintres d'un beau talent pour peindre deux grands tableaux... l'autre la bienfaisance consolant les malheureux pour une honnête abondance. Je tiens à ce que les deux dont je parle ci-dessus soient aussi bien faits' que le Songe de saint Joseph (testament de M.-J. Boulard, 1825). Entre les différents changements de style de Pujol, cette peinture est représentative d'une fidélité à l'enseignement de 'l'Ecole'. Partie et traduction plastique très proches d'une pierre noire Martyr descendu aux Catacombes (coll. privée, cliché Jeanneteau, CNMH) ; pour la figure féminine, voir le Saint Jean de l'autel de l'église Sainte-Elisabeth à Paris (1828) et pour les têtes d'hommes barbus, un dessin de l'ancienne coll. Y. Bideau.
