Historique :	Pietro Vannuci, dit Le Perugin (1446-1523). Ce tableau, qui figura à l'exposition de l'art italien à Paris en 1935, était à l'origine sur bois et fut transporté sur toile en 1936. Il formait le couronnement d'un grand retable exécuté par le Perugin de 1496 à 1499 pour l'église San Pietro de Perouse. Déjà démembré au 18e siècle, ses éléments firent partie du deuxième envoi d'Italie en 1797 et ses différentes parties furent dispersées quelques années plus tard par le musée du Louvre. Le panneau central représentant l'Ascension du Christ fut envoyé au musée de Lyon, la prédelle à Rouen, deux grands médaillons avec David et Isaïe à Nantes, la lunette, enfin en 1803, à l'église Saint-Gervais à Paris. Les uns et les autres se trouvent encore dans ces différentes villes.
