Historique :	Sébastien Bourdon (Montpellier 1616-Paris 1671). Ancien couvent de la Merci (quartier Sainte-Avoye). Muséum central. Déposé en 1811 à Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois. Pierre Nolasque, originaire du Languedoc, créa, en 1218, l'ordre de la Merci pour le rachat des captifs. Il fut secondé par Raymond de Penafort, maître général des Frères Prêcheurs, et encouragé par le roi Jacques d'Aragon. Il fut canonisé en 1628. Le couvent de la Merci de Paris fut fondé dès 1613 par Marie de Médicis. Outre le tableau de Bourdon, on y voyait deux statues d'Anguier représentant saint Pierre Nolasque et saint Raymond de Penafort. On sait que Sébastien Bourdon a pratiqué simultanément des genres fort différents, rendant par là difficile l'établissement d'une chronologie de ses oeuvres. On peut toutefois rapprocher le tableau exposé de la Chute de Simon le Magicien (cathédrale de Montpellier), très proche par la composition et le style, et que les documents permettent de situer vers 1660.
